Greetings and salutations! Today's lie is a longer story than usual but stick with me and I'll layout the entire lie. Get comfy.
I've been working at a company for nearly three years. I love my job. I'm on a great team, I've got a great supervisor. When this company was purchased last year by one of the wealthiest men in America, coworkers were pleased, thinking that perhaps the director would be replaced. You see, as great as my job is, its hindered at times by said director. He's uneducated, allows his religion to dictate how he runs the office, and most positions of authority are filled with his friends/relatives. Most of the administrative positions are filled with people from his church. Its a joke. This director refused to take phone calls from smaller clients because "they're not worth my time". (yes I've heard him say this) and the larger clients he's scared of because they see through him. Several coworkers and I have quietly joked that we can't get into the director's office for all the smoke and mirrors set up outside his door. In spite of that we manage to make this company millions. No exaggeration. And for that, this director was taken with the very clients he refuses to speak to, to Cabo San Lucas as a reward. And then he stood in my team's area telling us all about how awesome it was.
Why would he do that? Because my team carries the heaviest workload. He needs us. He also loathes us. We're not what he's deemed "appropriate". Please don't misunderstand me, we dress in business attire, we're on time to meetings, and we make this director look amazing. However we're do not fall into his definition of female. This man is all about tradition gender roles. That's fine but allowing it to dictate work policy is wholly unacceptable. He's thoroughly unhappy one female is the breadwinner while she has a stay at home husband/father. He's quite visibly angry that I don't want children, and he's disgusted by another coworker who lives with her boyfriend and both she and her boyfriend have tattoos. She's covered at work but that's besides the point for this director.
After yet another week of working 60 hours, I was pondering if there was a way to do this without him. I mean without the company. What if I could bypass this jerk, his misogynistic ways, and make more money? I see the amount of money my own projects bring in and the company takes sixty percent! I very quietly spoke with my clients and they were intrigued.
So where's the lie? I have to learn a new computer program. And I've been stalling because its so difficult. The lie is that I'll be able to master this program and start my own company from my house; I've given myself a one year deadline. There's the lie: that I can do this in a year.
Off to keep studying the computer program.
